Strep A (strep throat) is an infection of the throat caused by Streptococcus bacteria. The same Strep A also causes skin infections. If untreated, Strep A can lead to Rheumatic Fever, which causes swelling with inflammation that can damage hearts.
Yes it is. It is spread by close contact like droplets from coughing or sneezing and can also be spread by sharing food or drinks.
Symptoms of strep throat can include:
- a painful or scratchy throat
- trouble swallowing
- redness at the back of your mouth
- fever
- bad breath
- the glands in your neck are swollen
- your tonsils are large and covered in white stuff
- headache
- stomach pain
- nausea and vomiting
- sometimes, you may also have a skin rash along with fever and sore throat, this condition is known as scarlet fever.
By stopping the spread of Strep A throat infections and treating strep throat with antibiotics (penicillin), we can prevent Strep A and Rheumatic Fever.
This means if you have a sore throat get it checked at your doctors or at school if they do throat checks. Throat checks are free for children.
Treating skin infections is important too as it also limits Strep A spread.
Please see a health professional if you or your child has a skin infection.
